06 - carousal

http://edition.cnn.com/2011/11/24/tech/innovation/moving-platforms/index.html

His scheme would see travelers served by a carousel of trams and high-speed trains

carousal - (noun) a noisy or drunken feast or social gathering; revelry.

And what happens if the passenger transfer isn't complete by the time these two connected trains, travelling at high speed, reach the switch?  Could be a bunch of rowdy, uncooperative soccer fans, an octogenian who has fallen on the transfer platform, a cranky child who just doesn't want to get on the other train...

Also, assume the train is travelling at 100mph/170kph, (the HSR slows down and the tram speeds up) for a 5 minute transfer process the trains will be connected for over 8 miles/14 km.

Also, this overlooks the fact that cities are often the destination.  A Swiss intercity train has a capacity of almost 1,000 passengers.  What happens if more people want to disembark then there is room for on the tram?

Also, the city route is a loop.  Instead of riding a tram straight to the station people will 'ride the loop' with a number of them necessarily riding in the opposite direction of the fast train they will eventually board, making the overall trip longer, not shorter.

Don't get me wrong.  I am a public transportation advocate and user, but this whole concept, while 'cool' hasn't been thought out fully.
